SSAB non fossil energy steel

Jan 11, 2022

Since the successful delivery of the world's first batch of non fossil energy steel in the third quarter of 2021, the global high-strength special steel manufacturer Swedish Steel Group (hereinafter referred to as "SSAB") has vigorously promoted the application of this future oriented green innovation achievement. Up to now, the non fossil energy steel produced by SSAB has been supplied to Volvo, Mercedes Benz, Cargotec and other world-famous enterprises. In the coming 2021, with non fossil energy steel, a product highly in line with the carbon neutralization trend, SSAB actively injects new power into the carbon reduction process of itself and users.

In 2021, the global economy will show a rapid recovery trend. At the same time, the global demand for raw materials, including steel, also soared. SSAB consistently adheres to stable supply to customers and provides guarantee for high-quality production of customers in various industries with high-quality products. In China, SSAB has served thousands of customers, overcome adverse factors such as supply shortage and logistics difficulties, fully supported many industries such as mining, construction machinery, transportation and passenger cars, and created a historic performance peak.

In recent years, SSAB has made continuous efforts in the field of green steel. As early as 2016, SSAB, lkab and Vattenfall jointly launched the hybrit project to use hydrogen without fossil fuels to reduce iron ore. In July 2021, hybrit pilot plant has completed the trial production of sponge iron. The technical breakthrough of hybrit project enables the steelmaking process to reduce carbon emissions by about 90%, which has become a decisive step on the road to non fossil energy steel.

Since then, the users of SSAB non fossil energy steel have been expanding. SSAB has established a partnership with Mercedes Benz to accelerate the introduction of non fossil energy steel into automobile production. The first prototype parts of Mercedes Benz body shell made of SSAB fossil free steel are planned to be launched in 2022. Faurecia became the first auto parts supplier to jointly explore the use of non fossil energy steel with SSAB. After SSAB and Cargotec reached a cooperation agreement, non fossil energy steel was introduced into the cargo transportation industry and will be applied to Cargotec cargo transportation equipment.
